One of the most studied markers of regulation capacity is heart rate variability (HRV)—usually discussed as an index of cardiac vagal tone and flexible self-regulation. Across research, higher HRV tends to be associated with better self-control and executive functioning. These are the skills leaders rely on when stakes are high. And interventions that train regulation can move the needle: a meta-analysis found HRV biofeedback is associated with a large reduction in self-reported stress and anxiety.
